Whitehead, Kathy

Kathy Whitehead’s energetic presentations are tailored to groups of all ages and are designed to mesh with curriculum requirements. Her experience as an elementary school teacher shaped her interest in writing for children. She holds a Masters degree in Educational Administration and is a former Regional Advisor for Brazos Valley – SCBWI.

Whitehead’s picture book biography Art From Her Heart: Folk Artist Clementine Hunter (G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 2008) is on the New York Public Library’s 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing list, Chicago Public Library’s Best of the Best Books of 2008, Alabama’s 2009-2010 Emphasis on Reading Award List, Norman A. Sugarman Children’s Biography Award Nominee for 2010, Bank Street College Children’s Book Committee Best Books of the Year list, Kansas State Reading Circle 2009 Recommended Reading list and CCBC Choices 2009 list. Her picture book Looking for Uncle Louie on the Fourth of July (Boyds Mills Press, 2005) captures the joy of watching an Independence Day parade in Texas complete with the arrival of the customized lowriders.
