Hein, Joy Fisher

Joy Fisher Hein is an artist, gardener, naturalist and illustrator of Kathi Appelt’s award winning MISS LADY BIRD’S WILDFLOWERS: HOW A FIRST LADY CHANGED AMERICA. She also illustrated SAM HOUSTON: STANDING FIRM and DAVID CROCKETT: CREATING A LEGEND, by Mary Dodson Wade. Joy was selected as the artist for the 2009 TEXAS READING CLUB. She was selected by the city of San Antonio, to create thirteen large art panels that interpret the history of Walker Ranch Historic Landmark Park. Joy loves nature and has gardened all her life. She is a Texas Master Naturalist and is certified by the National Wildlife Federation to create School Yard Habitats. She lives with her husband, artist, Professor Emeritus, Frank Hein, in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

PRESENTATIONS:

  1. NATURE and NURTURE, LADY BIRD’S MISSION: Presentation also includes Joy’s Texas Insect Collection, with huge centipedes, scorpions and butterflies with a discussion about the importance of bio-diversity.

  2. HOW TO CREATE A PICTURE BOOK: Joy shows and explains all the steps needed to create a picture book. This presentation also includes math and encourages artistic vision.

  3. ARTIST DETECTIVE; RESEARCHING NONFICTION: So many interesting places to search for historical and natural visual references.

  4. A COLLABORATION BETWEEN AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR: Newbery Award recipient, Kathi Appelt and Joy share their six year journey of friendship, struggles and creativity with their collaboration of MISS LADY BIRD’S WILDFLOWER: HOW A FIRST LADY CHANGES AMERICA.
