Marianne Dyson
There IS gravity in space, the Moon does NOT have a dark side, and Jupiter has at least 60 moons. However, kids today might not know these things because of exposure to misleading explanations, incorrect terminology, “cartoon” physics, old data, and book and Internet sources full of misconceptions.
Marianne Dyson can help. Through interactive demonstrations and hands-on workshops, she explains why astronauts have puffy faces, how the space station stays “up” despite gravity pulling down on it, and even how the space toilet works.
Inspired by the Apollo program as a child, she was the first woman in her family to graduate from college, earning a degree in physics cum laude. She became one of the first women flight controllers, working for NASA as a Flight Activities Officer in Mission Control.
Dyson has published five books, including Space Station Science (Scholastic) that won the 2000 Golden Kite Award for best nonfiction book, and Home on the Moon (National Geographic) which won the 2004 American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award.
A former magazine editor and current science consultant, Dyson is also the author of Homework Help on the Internet (Scholastic), The Space Explorer’s Guide to Stars & Galaxies (Scholastic), Space and Astronomy: Decade by Decade (Facts On File), and numerous short stories and articles for adults and children. She produces the annual souvenir books for the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement and reviews books for her Web site and the National Space Society.
