Our annual Houston-SCBWI Conference 2010 will be held on Saturday February 20, 2010 at the Merrell Center in Katy. Registration is CLOSED.
**All conference attendees will have the opportunity to submit to the speakers AFTER the conference. Details will be in your information folder that day.

Cynthia Leitich Smith SOLD OUT!
Acclaimed author Cynthia Leitich Smith writes short stories, funny picture books, Native American fiction, and YA Gothic fantasies. She is a faculty member at the Vermont College M.F.A. program. Her website (www.cynthialeitichsmith.com) was named a Writer’s Digest top 10 Writer Site on the Internet. Her blog, Cynsations, (cynthialeitichsmith.blogspot.com) has been cheered by SCBWI National and School Library Journal. Cynthia’s latest/upcoming titles include TANTALIZE (2007) and ETERNAL (2009), both YA Gothics from Candlewick, and, a southwestern picture book, HOLLER LOUDLY (Dutton, 2010).

Ruta RimasSold Out!
Assistant Editor Ruta Rimas, Balzer & Bray/HarperCollins, joined HarperCollins Children’s Books after a three year stint teaching algebra to teenagers. Her tastes range from punchy/snarky (á la Lemony Snickett) to thriller sci-fi (GONE by Michael Grant) to perfectly poignant (Jerry Spinelli). As part of the Balzer & Bray team, she is looking to acquire fresh, exciting, and fabulous talent. Originally from Chicago, she now resides in Brooklyn.

Patrick Collins
Patrick Collins (Creative Director, Henry Holt Books for Young Readers) art directs and designs picture books, young adult novels, and middle grade fiction. Some of the recent picture books he has worked on are: Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?; Old Penn Station; Fabian Escapes; This is the Stable; The Curious Adventures of the Abandoned Toys; and Rosa which won a 2006 Caldecott Honor Medal. Recent novel projects include: Young Fu, Part of Me, Dog Diaries, and The Poet Slave of Cuba. Patrick studied art at Northeastern University in Boston.

Alexandra Cooper Sold Out!
Alexandra Cooper is a senior editor at Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, where she works on hardcover trade picture books, middle-grade fiction, and young adult novels. She is the editor of the #1 New York Times bestseller Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope by Nikki Grimes, illustrated by Bryan Collier. Alexandra is privileged to count Jane Yolen, Kathy Krull, Heather Vogel Frederick, and Nora Raleigh Baskin among the talented writers she works with.

Lisa Ann Sandell Sold Out!
Lisa Ann Sandell is a senior editor at Scholastic Inc., where she focuses her attention on acquiring and editing middle grade and young adult hardcover novels, and she manages the Dear America series. Lisa is also the author of three young adult novels, The Weight of the Sky, Song of the Sparrow, and A Map of the Known World. She has also taught creative writing at the CUNY Hunter College program for continuing education and for Mediabistro.com.

Sara CroweSold Out!
Sara Crowe is an agent with Harvey Klinger, Inc., a full service boutique literary agency in New York. She represents a range of adult fiction and nonfiction and children’s books, her focus is on young adult and middle grade. Sara is always looking for strong, original new voices: there are many debuts among her recent sales, and she’d like to keep it that way. Sara represents the author and not just the project, working to establish long-term relationships and develop authors’ careers. Before joining Harvey Klinger four years ago, she was a foreign rights agent at Trident Media Group where she worked with Russell Banks, Michael Ondaatje and Louis Sachar, among others. She started her career at The Wylie Agency in New York and then worked as a foreign rights agent in their London office. Sara continues to aggressively market British and translation rights for her authors, working directly in the UK and with their fabulous team of co agents in other territories.
**NEW** Nancy Feresten is has been editing books for children and young adults for almost 25 years, concentrating on nonfiction and reference works in the sciences and history. She began her career at Harper & Row Junior Books Group and has since worked at Scientific American Books for Young Readers, Scholastic, and National Geographic. Since 1999, she has been Vice President, Editor-in-Chief of National Geographic Children’s Books, an imprint specializing in nonfiction and reference for children ages four to fourteen. Critiques for Nancy are sold out.
